Before choosing a trail, learn about the route, local rules, weather conditions and whether a guide is needed. Bring water and suitable equipment. If conditions change or you feel unsafe, postpone or end the walk.
- Tell someone your route and expected return time.
- Stay on permitted paths; shortcuts damage the environment and can cause accidents.
- Take your rubbish away and do not remove plants, rocks or animals.
- Watch wildlife from a distance and respect residents and other visitors.
- Avoid slippery sections, exposed rocks and trails during or soon after rain.
- Keep your phone charged and know how to ask for help before setting out.
